Climate First! Statement Regarding Systemic Racism in the U.S.
Climate First! is in complete solidarity with protesters struggling against the horrific violence of systemic racism. We are committed to climate action centered in racial justice. Without justice for all, the U.S. will not be able to address climate change, a crisis that disproportionately impacts people of color. To move forward as an organization, Climate First! will actively educate itself on the intersection of these issues, seek more diversity in its supporters and volunteers, and fully support organizations working for racial justice. If you think just lobbying U.S. politicians, regulators, or the current administration will save the climate, think again! While President Biden and others in the federal government, as well as at the state level, have done some excellent work addressing the climate crisis, powerful U.S. corporations, such as ExxonMobil, JPMorgan Chase, and others, have a strong interest in slowing efforts to phase out fossil fuels. Therefore, we must also convince influential companies and their allies to strongly support – with action – the United States' transition away from climate-wrecking fossil fuels. Whether it's confronting a major U.S. bank via a protest or virtual meeting over the lender's massive financing of dirty fossil fuels, promoting green banking (AKA socially responsible banking) to consumers and businesses, or encouraging a municipality to adopt a clean energy program, Climate First! is all about direct action to address the climate crisis.
Our mission is pretty simple:
Climate First! strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy in the Mid-Atlantic region, by organizing grassroots efforts that encourage corporations and local governments to think climate first.
