Come to the Stop the Money Pipeline (STMP) and Wells Fargo Union's training on October 30th to learn how to canvass Wells Fargo workers in your community. In an effort to help push back on authoritarianism and the fossil fuel oligarchy, STMP and union organizers recently created a campaign where activists share union literature and other information with Wells Fargo workers around the US. So far, the campaign has led to 28 Wells Fargo branches joining the Wells Fargo union. And organizers believe that with proper training, climate activists--like those at Climate First!--will be able to convince many more branches to join in the future. What’s going on with Wells Fargo? The infamous U.S. lender has aligned itself with the agenda of Trump and fossil fuel billionaires in numerous ways: last February, Wells Fargo made a disastrously irresponsible move, and dropped its climate pollution targets; the bank also threatened to privatize the US Postal Service; and presently, it is the world’s largest funder of Palantir, a private corporation that is using billions of our tax dollars for surveillance and immigrant deportation software. And there are others.
How do climate activists and others possibly move an institution like Wells Fargo to change for the better? They need to go after its bottom line. And fortunately, we have a new partner that can threaten real revenue loss for Wells Fargo: the newly formed Wells Fargo union.
If we team up with this union, we'll have more power to stop the authoritarian takeover of our government, and to secure a healthier and safer future for all people. And if enough Wells Fargo workers join the union, the bank's workers can withhold or threaten to withhold their labor which could cost the company real revenue loss. Workers can then use this leverage to negotiate for higher wages, improved working conditions, and an end to Wells Fargo’s massive financing of fossil fuels. And critically, if we can convince Wells Fargo to reduce its funding of climate-wrecking fossil fuels, other major US banks might consider reducing their financing of oil and gas. That’s why the organizers' goal in this unionization campaign is to spread union literature and related info at hundreds of Wells Fargo branches around the country to build the power we all need to win.
The fact that workers have already organized unions at 28 Wells Fargo branches is shocking because the bank has engaged in union busting and employee intimidation. The bank's behavior has been so bad that 13 US Senators recently sent Wells Fargo a letter telling the company to respect workers' right to unionize.
In sum, that's why the Wells Fargo unionization campaign needs your help. Learn how to "plant the seed" with Wells Fargo workers about joining the union at the upcoming training on October 30th.
