Climate First! holds its 12th Annual Meeting (AM) virtually this coming Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 1:30 pm EST. And we hope you can attend the meeting as we will look at the unprecedented number of negative political events occurring in the new year vis-a-vis climate in the U.S. And how we at Climate First! are thinking of responding in its campaign work. Climate First!'s activists have been dramatically challenged by the President’s actions against clean energy and climate protection since he took charge in January. So much so, that we were utterly baffled as far as how to go forward. Add an almost completely submissive Congress, and we could have easily fallen into complete despair, which would, of course, made the administration's job easier.

However, we at Climate First! have been working to adjust our mindset, as well as our campaigns to the new “world” that we work in. For example, Climate First! will get more involved in political advocacy at the state level, while adapting its bank campaign work. As far as state level advocacy, we will work to get “polluter pays” legislation passed in Maryland and possibly nearby states.

Towards that, we will have a staff member from U.S. Senator, Chris Van Hollen’s office speak at the upcoming AM about polluter pays legislation. With New York State and Vermont having already passed this critical legislation, it is exciting that efforts are also now underway in California, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Minnesota to get fossil fuel companies to start paying for the damages resulting from climate-amplified natural disasters.
